Shedding Light on Endometrios

Shedding Light on Endometriosis: March is Endometriosis Awareness Month!

As we all know, March is Endometriosis awareness month, and at South Shore Women’s and Children’s Hospital, we are committed to raising awareness about this often misunderstood and under diagnosed condition that affects millions of women worldwide.

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a chronic and often painful condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, commonly on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvic tissue. This tissue responds to the menstrual cycle, causing inflammation, scarring, and sometimes the formation of painful adhesions.

Why Awareness Matters:

Endometriosis affects an estimated 1 in 10 women during their reproductive years, yet there is still a significant lack of awareness and understanding surrounding this condition. Many women suffer in silence for years before receiving a proper diagnosis and treatment. By raising awareness, we can help empower women to recognize the signs and symptoms of endometriosis and seek timely medical care.

What are the causes?

The cause is unknown but some theories include:

Retrograde menstruation, coelomic metaplasia, altered immunity, stem cells and genetics.

What are the Symptoms?

The symptoms include painful periods, heavy periods, painful intercourse, pain with bowel movements or urination, infertility.

How You Can Get Involved:
